The World Can Get The Newest Country

   An island located in the South Pacific Ocean can become the youngest country in the world. A referendum of residents who supported it is awaiting approval from the Parliament of Papua New Guinea. 

 

  A referendum was held in the island of Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, to end the violence that has been going on for over a decade. . The residents of the island unanimously voted for their independence. In this historic referendum, the island has cleared its desire to move from Papua New Guinea to become an independent country.  

  The Bougainville Referendum Commission announced these results, stating that 176,928 out of the 181,067 people who voted, ie about 98 percent. Voted in support of independence. At the same time, only 3,043 votes were to remain with Papua New Guinea but they also want a little more autonomy. Close to one thousand votes were canceled.   The island currently comes under the rule of Papua New Guinea. It is not legally binding to consider the outcome of the process of referendum that lasted for two weeks from 23 November to 7 December 2019. Bougainville and Port Moresby will now decide the way forward from here through mutual negotiations. The Parliament of Papua New Guinea will take the final decision on this matter. 

  Referendum about independence is actually part of the peace process that has been going on for almost 20 years. After the bloody civil war between Bougainville and Papua New Guinea for 10 years ended in 1998, the two sides decided to hold such a referendum by mutual consent. 15,000 people died in this civil war.
