It is not legally binding to consider the outcome of the process of referendum that lasted for two weeks from 23 November to 7 December 2019. Bougainville and Port Moresby will now decide the way forward from here through mutual negotiations. The Parliament of Papua New Guinea will take the final decision on this matter.

After the bloody civil war between Bougainville and Papua New Guinea for 10 years ended in 1998, the two sides decided to hold such a referendum by mutual consent. 15,000 people died in this civil war.
