The India-Mauritius Comprehensive Economic Cooperation and Partnership Agreement (CECPA) was signed in Port Louis by Dr. Anoop Wadhavan, Secretary of Commerce in the Government of India and Ambassador of Mauritius and Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade Affairs at Port Louis. The agreement was signed in the presence of Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jagannath, and India's Foreign Minister S Jaishankar.
CECPA is the first trade agreement with any country in Africa by India. It is a limited agreement that deals with goods in business, basic rules, services, technical barriers to business (TBT), sanitation and phytosanitary (SPS) measures, settling disputes, general movement of individuals, telecommunications, financial services, border Will cooperate in fee procedures and other areas.
Impacts and Benefits: CECPA will provide an opportunity to encourage and improve trade between the two countries and to serve as an institutional mechanism. India will cover 310 export items under the CECPA. Including food items and beverages (80 products), agricultural products (25 products), textiles and textile products (27 products), base metals and other items (32 products), electricals and electronic goods (13 products), Includes plastics and chemicals (20 products), wood and products made from it (15 products) and other products. Similarly, 615 products of Mauritius will get priority in the Indian market, which will benefit them. This includes frozen fish, specialized sugar, biscuits, fresh fruits, juices, mineral water, beer, alcoholic drinks, soaps, bags, medical and surgical instruments and clothing.
Similarly, in the services sector, Indian companies will have access to about 115 sub-sectors of 11 major sectors of Mauritius. Indian companies will benefit from providing professional services, computer related services, research and development, other business services, telecommunications, financial, distribution, education, environment, tourism and travel, entertainment, yoga, audio-visual services and transport services.
India has likewise opened around 95 sub-sectors of 11 major service sectors to Mauritius companies. These include professional services, research and development, other business services, telecommunications, financial, distribution, higher education, environment, health, tourism and travel related services, entertainment and transport services.
The two sides have also agreed to negotiate an Automatic Trigger Safety Mechanism (ATSM) for a limited number of highly sensitive products within two years of the signing of the agreement.
Timetable:This agreement will come into force soon.
CECPA will further strengthen the deep and special relationship that already exists between India and Mauritius.
